Our Nanima You brought home to all of us. Home was in your suitcase where you pulled out cardigans, Bengay, gifts, and your suits that have that familiar scent. Home was in your cooking, the smells in the home and sounds of parontha sizzling. Home was in your constant reassurance and philosophy of “koi gal nahi” and reminders to keep moving forward. Home was in your strictness in how you dressed up to go out to the park and in making us do dictations oh how much we hated perfecting our handwriting. Home was in your loving nagging and laughter when you successfully annoyed one of your grandkids. You loved teasing us. Home was in how you saved us from scary bugs by smushing them with your hands, fearlessly. Your impact and presence spans so much further and deeper than your physical presence. You moved around a lot. You were the nomadic Nani. And somehow you would pack everything up in your bags and suitcases and arrive in your cardigans and suits and bring home to us, no matter where we were or where you came from. And that is something I hold very close to me because you taught me how to create a home no matter where I am. I learned this from a very young age. I would miss you a lot when you would leave and I told you to wear Bengay so that the bed can smell like you, and I can remember your warmth- my home. I feel at peace knowing that every time I cook with love, eat acchar, eat parontha, smell lemons, watch the stock market, wear a cardigan, and gold jewelry, I remember you and feel at home.
